Goshinkan Senpai

Goshinkan-Ryu Ju-Jitsu currently has six active licensed Senpai. However, not everyone is driven to put in the additional time learning how to teach others.

In Goshinkan Ju-Jitsu, when students get together, their behaviors are influenced by an awareness of the order and rank of each person within the dojo according to status. Respect to seniors is a dojo obligation that cannot be neglected. Nothing more clearly describes this hierarchical nature of Japanese martial arts, that the Japanese word "Senpai," meaning a senior or superior in any academic or organization in our society. The attitude toward one's 'Senpai' is characterized by formality, obedience, and trust.

The Senpai title is earned and awarded by the highest-ranked black belt or founder within the style of jujitsu. Goshinkan Ju-Jitsu students are awarded the title at 1st Kyu (2nd Degree Brown Belt) however in special cases the title may be given to a lower rank than 1st kyu if the student has progressed further than most and assisting by teaching the style as directed.

The Senpai has many responsibilities in the dojo: to enforce or pass on stylistic rules; dojo rules; teach respect for one's Shihan and Sensei.

This title is not automatically given out at 1st kyu, in fact, it is possible never to be given this title. Lastly, the title can be stripped from the student for disrespect or poor judgment.

To teach is to learn.

It is this top-tier of license Goshinkan-Ryu Ju Jitsu Senpai who continue to share ju jitsu with enthusiastic students across Canada.
